Linking to the Site

Links

I am happy for people to provide links to this site, however I ask that links are made just to the home page : http://www.calverr3.uklinux.net The reason for this is so that I can measure visits to the site - I wouldn't spend time putting all this information here if I didn't think people were reading it, and it is only by counting site hits that I know I'm not wasting my time. In addition you may find page names change as I update the underlying databases that drive the web pages, so if you link to an individual page you may find it disappears or refers to a different individual or family. If you do provide a link an email to let me know would be appreciated (see Contact Me).

Search Engines - my observations

After carrying out some searches on Google I realised that anyone finding one of my pages would be presented with a single page of information in isolation. I eventually came up with a way of offering a link to the main page to anyone who was not displaying a page within the frame structure (and thus seeing the associated menu).  I did this with a bit of JavaScript that resides on most pages. The original pages generated by GenoPro re-directed you automatically which meant that after searching for some information and finding the correct page you couldn't view it - I decided that was to drachonian and worked out my own compromise.

I then started looking closer at the Search Engine results and was a bit disappointed (although not surprised). I have submitted sitemaps to both Google and Yahoo so they both know what pages I have and when they are updated.  Yahoo seems to re-index much better and quicker, When I last checked Google was missing about 150 pages (it probably thinks the limited data on them isn't worth indexing). Some of my later pages still haven't appeared in the indexes after being there for a few months.

It was partly for that reason that I created an 'on-site' search that doesn't rely on external spiders and indexing.

For what it's worth I note that Google, doesn't acknowledge links to my site (so-called 'inlinks') from www.great-harwood.org.uk any longer although Yahoo does.
